About the Issue
IMAGINE: It’s the year 2068, and we've achieved worldwide gender equality in the broadest sense. Not only are genders outside the binary widely acknowledged and accepted, but people of all genders are paid equally for equal work, have equal opportunity and representation, are included in scientific studies, and are marketed to equally. You are making art from this future, and you are submitting a piece of work to an international popular culture magazine whose target audience includes English-speaking adults of all genders anywhere in the world.
What we're looking for:
We’re looking for a cover image that reflects a trans, non-binary, or genderqueer artist’s take on “a gender-inclusive future.”
The design should center a person/people; a futuristic landscape could be a cool background, but it’s not necessary and it definitely should not be the focus of the cover image. If multiple people are included in the image, we’d love for our cover to represent a wealth of gender expressions from all around the world. In addition, we’d prefer that the image include people of various races, abilities, and geographic and cultural backgrounds.
We strongly prefer a cover image that tells a story appropriate for an international pop culture magazine published in 2068. For example, perhaps the image tells the story of a new technology that’s all the rage in 2068, or the work of a human rights advocate from Iran who’s been influencing global politics, or an event like the 2068 summer Olympics or the annual international conference for gender equity. These are just examples; we’re open to your vision and welcome other interpretations of the issue’s theme.
As for style of art, we are leaning in the direction of illustration or digital painting, but we are also open to collage, photo manipulation, and other forms of visual art that meet the above criteria and can translate well to both print and digital media.
To recap:
-
We are seeking submissions from trans, non-binary, and/or genderqueer artists only.
-
We encourage trans, nonbinary and genderqueer artists who also have other marginalized identities to submit.
-
The successful submission will feature a person or people. If it features multiple people, we want to see a variety of gender expressions, abilities, races, and geographic and cultural backgrounds represented.
-
We strongly prefer an image that tells a story relevant to an international pop culture magazine published in 2068.
-
We are open to all styles of visual art, though we are leaning in the direction of illustration or digital painting.
Who can submit?
Trans, non-binary, and genderqueer artists from all around the globe are welcome to submit. We encourage trans, nonbinary, and genderqueer artists who also have other marginalized identities to submit.
Rights and Payment
We will pay $500.00 USD for the cover art. We’ll need worldwide print and e-book cover rights as well as rights to use the image or part(s) of the image on print and digital promotional materials, including the website, social media, and Kickstarter pages. Aside from that, we are open to negotiating the right details with the artist we choose. Payment will be made via PayPal.
